Destination: Self–Reliance

To Rely on One's Own Capabilities

Self-Reliance

(self–re·li·ance  \-ri-ˈlī-ənts\)

Reliance on one’s own capabilities, judgments, and decisions in
a self-sufficient manner; independence, self-direction, resourceful.

It’s true, I love to practice the many bushcraft and wilderness survival skills you read about in my Fox Walker Novel series. This interest is fueled by the fact that I’ve always been extremely fond of learning ancestral skills. You know, all the knowledge and skills that our grandparents and great grandparents knew about for everyday life. Self-reliance skills that have been all but forgotten over the years, as technology has become more and more a part of our lives.

Self-reliance is not only about how to survive the elements of Mother Nature…it’s also learning how to survive everyday situations, as well. It’s about learning how to adapt to whatever gets thrown our way. It’s about staying strong by finding inspiration in even the most mundane. Even in our careers we often face uncharted territory…where the landowners keep changing and the borders keep moving. But rather than let it overwhelm us, we can embrace a sense of new adventure right around the corner.

Writing Tip: Writing Platforms

Writing Tip: Writing Platforms

In today’s publishing world, it doesn’t matter whether you have a book deal with the traditional guys in New York, use a boutique, or set up your own company to publish your book – we all expected to do our own marketing – which brings up that “platform” word again.

Life Hack: Emergency Candle from a Crayon

If you’re like me, you have lots of candles on hand in your home. But hey, you never know where you may be when an emergency happens and a need for light arises. Or maybe you run out of candles during an extended power outage. Knowing how to use crayons as a candle might come in handy.

Preparedness: Being Self-Reliant

Preparedness: Being Self-Reliant

Preparedness doesn’t mean living in fear of the future. Being prepared can be as simple as knowing that you have the basics on hand to care for your family in a time of need. We do the best we can, don’t worry about what we can’t control, and know that it is far better than if we didn’t prepare at all.

Inspiration: When Life Goes Off Track!

I’m a planner, a list maker, an organizer with a capital O. It’s not that I am especially talented at being organized. It’s only that I’ve discovered it helps me feel that I have some control in my ADD /OCD world – believing I am creating order out of chaos. Oh - I do...

Inspiration: Starting From Scratch

Inspiration: Starting From Scratch

It’s easy to blame everything on the economy–that’s why we make less money at our jobs, or lost our job. That’s why our business is failing–and why we can’t afford the life style we once enjoyed.

Inspiration: Picking Your Battles

Inspiration: Picking Your Battles

I was a very young, inexperienced wife and mother of two boys. And yes, I was still under the delusion that (at all times) I could be a perfect wife and mother to my three guys. I was sitting on the floor sorting through the white clothes and grumbling to myself about the fact that I had to sit there and turn all the yucky, smelly, dirty socks, underwear and t-shirts right side out before throwing them into the washing machine.

Inspiration: Avoiding the Panic Button

Inspiration: Avoiding the Panic Button

We’ve all been there…we feel the tightening in our chest, making it difficult to breathe…our mind tumbling and tripping over itself. We try to focus. We know we need to, if we are to get through the situation, or crisis…but it all feels overwhelming and uncontrollable. Maybe we can help each other find solutions–before we hit that panic button.

About Indy

Being outside in nature is the most basic part of who I am. Besides gaining knowledge about wildlife, I learn lessons about who I am, and surprise myself about what I am capable of achieving. Nature continually inspires me. It is a part of all my writings, no matter the genre or subject matter.

American Dream

“If America could be, once again, a nation of self-reliant farmers, craftsmen, hunters, ranchers and artists, then the rich would have little power to dominate others. Neither to serve or to rule: That was the American Dream.”
